Healthy Eating on a Budget

13:17

Since moving out and starting Uni, I've recently discovered how expensive it is to eat healthy compared to just living off microwave meals!!! Living right near a Lidl definitely has its perks!! Everything is a lot cheaper in there and I am lucky enough to still be able to get everything that I want!!

It's seriously hard to get to the correct nutrients when living on a budget and especially at Uni when everyone else is surviving off pot noodles!! (YUCK), but here are my quick tips to help you out!

  1. Plan your meals and snacks! This way you aren't faced with having to quickly buy something when you are hungry and we all know this will quite often lead to a cheeky chocolate bar, something the body doesn’t need that we take just for the sake of it

  1. Don't be strict with yourself, this will only lead to cravings, everyone needs a snack, I currently like carrot sticks and dip, or cereal bars. If you don't eat enough it won't do you any favours your body will end up 'clinging' to our remaining fat.

  1. I often live by the moto don't go for the cheapest option, go for the 2nd cheapest. This way the products are slightly higher quality and meat products will be less likely to be full of fat or pumped with water. This allows you to get quality food for a cheaper price.

  1. It’s very hard to portion size at uni as buying ingredients as a meal for one is quite tricky. I can often count myself guilty of this but just giving myself a little bit more pasta just because I’ve cooked it all. But just remember these little bits start to add up and up!! I recommend either cooking a larger meal for more people, or just cooking 3 meals to freeze.

  1. Buy wholemeal products!! Although some people dislike the taste I can barely taste a difference between wholemeal and white products. It has tonnes more nutrients in such as Vitamin B, iron and help to boost proteins actions. And for the same price as ordinary pasta, why would you say no?

  1. Fruit and vegetables often go off before you get the chance to finish them, so why don't you club together and get them? This way you can all enjoy healthy food without putting any to waste.

Most importantly just eat what you enjoy :)
